Contributions

The development of this non-invasive technology was made possible by the contributions of Dr. John B. West (M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., Medical Advisory Chair) who co-invented the AGM100 with Steve Lee. Dr West dedicated his life’s-work to understand lung pathophysiology and gas exchange: he is a Fellow of the National Academy of Medicine, served as president of the American Physiological Society, and is highly regarded as the most noted physiologists around the world for his work. He has authored over 500 scientific articles and more than twenty medical books, including Respiratory Physiology: The Essentials and Pulmonary Pathophysiology: The Essentials, which are the standard medical textbooks for medical school.

West is well known to medical students and residents who regularly use his accounts of pulmonary function and pathology. For many of his friends in APS, however, his name evokes another type of association. Although using techniques far superior to what they had available, he has recreated in our time a heroic age of physiology marked by names such as Joseph Barcroft, J. S. Haldane, L. J. Henderson, and others, even of G. H. L. Mallory—almost legendary figures of remarkable achievement. He was awarded the Edward Livingston Trudeau Medal by the ATS, recognizing his lifetime of contributions and leadership in pulmonary medicine.

“Physiology will always be the basis of the intelligent practice of medicine… it is extremely important.”

– Dr West
